Dayne - It must have been a God send to find you on the web with your anxiety/panic attack information. I have had headaches all my life, which I have dealt with just fine. I do not medicate myself to get better, they are just a part of me. However, I have a 12 year old daughter, who for the past year and a half has had huge panic attacks. She also has hydrocephalus which a shunt at 6 months helped drain water off her brain.
I thought that possibly there was a problem with her shunt and she underwent surgery to check it. They found out that it was working fine. I was told to go to a therapist for further treatment. So after opening up her head, literally, and seeing a doctor ($175 per 45 min. - that accepted no insurance once a week), she still had problems. She couldn't get through a full day of school, she faints, she's been in an ambulance, has had EEG's done to see if she's having seizures. All tests have shown nothing and she was ending up at home unable to go or do anything. She's lost friends, wouldn't socialize just sat on the computer on the couch playing games or watching TV.
Since then, many things have changed. For one, my instinct told me that more needed to get done. I started doing research on the computer and realized your wonderful web site was our blessing. Many things in your program (which we've purchased) I have known was true, but never exactly was able to give great examples like you did. She understands now that she creates her own thoughts and she needs to let them go and not hold onto the bad ones (the river and log theory) . I've told her over and over that she is creating this horrible attack on herself, but we didn't approach it like you wrote. You are right. It works. It's like saying don't take candy away from a baby because they will just cry harder for it. For heavens sake, give the kid the whole bag and she'll be happy right?
For the most part, my daughter goes through school now with no more worries about getting an attack. She stops by the nurses office half way through the school day to lay down and find time to relax and release excess energy that she's accumulated. If she does get one, she knows how to take control of it. It will not win her over! We will win with your techniques!
I have to mention one more thing. Last June we went to Cancun (Playa De Carmen section) and we walked the pebble stone street to shop. She had a very bad attack there. We had to rush to the car to escape it even when we were with 10 other family members. This week, we just came back from the same place. She walked the streets every night shopping and having fun, fun, fun. Not one attack. I brought your book on the plane and re-read it front to back. We have done almost everything that you put in your program!
So I'd like to say, thank you for your help and like I first mentioned, I've had headaches all my life. Well, no more. I use your techniques daily and they banished my headaches too. Incredible. Ever thought of going to school to become a therapist? You'd do great.

depression that had settled over my life. It is totally true
that you need to want to change and want to get better, and
no one can force you or help you if you arent going
to work for it.
Before starting this program, I felt like everything that
could go wrong was going wrong in my life. Looking back, I
know that I was blaming myself and getting worked up about
the littlest things. SelfSteps helped me by guiding me through
the program from getting rid of Mr. Criticism
to taking care of myself and my body, this program really
works on fighting depression and anxiety from all sides. Plus,

is written in a humorous, non-preachy way.
I cant really describe how it worked, because I still

yourself and brought a great amount of strength and courage

by a history of experience. One of the difficulties of youth
is they have not suffered long enough and don't take their

I think your use of visualization is extremely helpful as

explanation of how being aware of thoughts is critical to

of your ideas. ie the lemon, the giant green frog, the garden

I have used many of these techniques over time, finding them
in different places. With persistence, so much positive change

I have only experienced anxiety and panic for a brief period
in my life about 15 years ago, but I have suffered with depression
for all of my adult life and over the years, like you, I have
developed habits to help me overcome this.
My practice includes daily meditation and stretches in the
morning, physical aerobic workout at lunch time and watching
my thoughts through out the day. I am lucky to be in a job,
as a mental health nurse, where I work with people daily,
